A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the American M109 Paladin self-propelled howitzer in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit or a replacement part, but an aid for the painting stage. According to its name the set is cut for the M109 kits from Italeri, Tamiya, Revell, Academy and Testors; compare the wheel diameter in your own kit all the same.
The M109 is built on an aluminum hull with torsion bar suspension and carries a long row of large road wheels on each side. The essential difference from tanks is up above, though: the howitzer has no return rollers and the upper run of the track is led directly over the tops of the road wheels. The rubber tire bands are thus visible along the whole length of the chassis, from above and from below, and nothing covers them — no side armor plates as on modern tanks. There is therefore no place where a carelessly guided line could be hidden. The second thing to allow for is the weight of the howitzer itself in relation to the width of the tire band: the impression of a massive running gear stands or falls on how straight the border between rubber and rim is along the whole length of the vehicle.
There are many wheels and they are large, so the work can be well organized. Spike the wheels on skewers pushed into a polystyrene board and mask them in one sitting — interrupting the work means the pressure of your hand changes and the last wheels look different from the first. Lift a mask off the sheet with a needle, transfer it with fine tweezers and before spraying press the edge down all the way around with a blunt toothpick. On large wheels a magnifier is useful mainly for checking rather than for fitting; go over all the wheels through it at once before you reach for the airbrush. Spray square from above, in thin coats, and give each wheel the same amount of paint — a difference in coverage is immediately apparent across a row of wheels of the same size. Lift the masks off in the same order in which you fitted them.
