The real subject

The Grumman F-14A Tomcat was the first production version of the well known carrier fighter with a variable-sweep wing. The crew of two sits in tandem, the pilot in front and the weapon systems operator behind. Machines of this version formed the backbone of the fighter armament of American aircraft carriers for many years and the rear of their fuselage with its pair of nozzles is among the most conspicuous features of the whole silhouette.

What the accessory solves

This is a replacement for the exhaust nozzles on a model of the F-14A in 1:72 scale, enclosed in both the open and the closed position. In a small scale this part of a model tends to be simplified, so the replacement tells in the final impression. Which of the two positions to use is something to consider from photographs of the machine you are building. Which kit the parts are drawn for and how they are fitted is stated by the manufacturer on the packaging and in the enclosed instructions; go by it.

Building and painting tips

The parts are not polystyrene and ordinary plastic cement will not join them. Reach for super glue or a two-part adhesive and degrease the surfaces before joining them. Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder down with fine abrasive paper, so that the outline stays regular. Lay the small parts out on a support so that they do not get lost. Before painting, wash them in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry. Apply the paint in thin coats and choose the shade according to photographs of the real subject.
