A masking set for painting the road wheels of the American M48A3 medium tank in the Mod.B version. This is not a model or replacement wheels — the masks cover the rim so the rubber tire band can be sprayed in a shade of its own with a sharp edge. The set is cut for the kit from Dragon.
The M48 carries six pairs of road wheels per side, the drive sprocket at the rear and the idler wheel at the front. The feature that tells it from the later M60 is the number of return rollers: the M48 has five per side, the M60 three. For masking work that means you have ten smaller rollers here on top of the twelve road wheels, and they too have a rubber ring and the same painting logic. The wheels are well exposed at the same time; the tank has no full skirts along its whole length and the lower part of the running gear is visible from the side in full. Leave the tire bands on the rollers out and you get a running gear where two rows of detail do not match in color — and on the M48 that shows perhaps more than on any other American tank, precisely because there are so many rollers.
Because of that large number of small parts it pays to do every wheel in one batch. Gather the road wheels and the return rollers together, spray them all at once in the base shade, let them harden for a day and only then fit the masks and finish spraying the tire bands — all in one session and from one mix of paint. Come back to it a week later and mix the paint again, and the rubber shade on the rollers will not match the wheels exactly, and it will show. The step therefore belongs in one closed block between the base coat and the assembly of the running gear.
This is a masking accessory, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
