About product

Masking set 1:35 Pz.Kpfw.38(t) Ausf.E/F (Eduard)

On models of armored vehicles, masking most often concerns small circular areas, that is vision ports and the centers of the road wheels, where rubber and metal are to be separated by a sharp edge. That is precisely what is done badly by hand: a circle cut from tape never comes out exactly, and the asymmetry shows immediately when you look at the running gear. Pre-cut masks remove that problem; the shapes are the same on every wheel and all you do is seat them and press them down. The set is made by Eduard, a Czech company from Obrnice near Most.

The real subject

Pz.Kpfw.38(t) is the German designation of a light tank of Czechoslovak design, which originated as the LT vz. 38 and was built at the Prague factory CKD, later designated BMM. The Ausf.E and F versions differed from the earlier batches mainly in strengthened armor, whose frontal thickness was raised roughly twofold by adding add-on armor plates. The armament consisted of a 37 mm gun and machine guns. The type was used in 1941 and 1942, after which it was obsolete as a battle tank, and its chassis served as the basis for a range of other vehicles.

Usage tips

Degrease the wheels and the vision ports before masking; a mask does not hold on mold release agent. Fit the masks only on a dried base shade, that is spray the base color of the vehicle first and only then mask the centers of the wheels and spray the dark shade of the rubber, or the other way round according to the procedure you choose. Press the edges of the circular masks down with a toothpick all the way round. Take them off before applying weathering, because washes and pigments would run under the edge and leave an unclean transition that then has to be finished with a brush.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of armored vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who cannot manage to cut symmetrical circles for the wheels by hand
  • Those who build several vehicles and want to save time
  • Those interested in clean running gear with a sharp metal-to-rubber transition

This is an add-on masking set for a kit you already own. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. This is a set of masking templates for painting a 1:35 kit you already own.

Above all for separating the rubber tires and the metal hubs of the road wheels, and for covering the vision ports. Those are the places where tape cut by hand hits a circle worst.

The make-up of the masks is given in the manufacturer's instructions. Go through the sheet against them once it is unpacked and match the shapes to the individual parts of the model.

After the paint has dried and definitely before applying washes and pigments, so that the weathering does not run under the edge of a mask.
