A set of photo-etched metal sheet in 1:35 scale intended for making razor wire, that is a flat strip with punched blades of the kind used on the fencing and barriers of military and civilian sites. The manufacturer is the Chinese brand E.T. Model, which specializes in photo-etched accessories for models of military vehicles. The designation Type.1 distinguishes one of the blade shape variants that the manufacturer offers in this range. The set is a universal one and is not tied to a particular kit.
In scale, razor wire can practically not be replaced by any other material — neither plastic imitations nor ones twisted from wire have the necessary thinness and sharp silhouette. The photo-etched strip is wound into a coil and stretched out to the required length, so the result holds its shape and at the same time stays convincing in scale. It finds a use in dioramas with checkpoints, base perimeters, field fortifications or barriers by roads. It will serve just as well as an accessory for a display case with a single vehicle.
Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and clean the cuts up with a fine file. Then wind the strip tightly onto a cylindrical core — a brush handle or a drill shank of a diameter matching the intended coil will serve well — and stretch it carefully to the required length. The metal is glued with cyanoacrylate; on larger areas a two-part epoxy applied in spots helps. A base coat meant for metal is essential before painting, otherwise the finish does not hold; then comes a dark steel shade, light emphasis of the edges with a drybrush and finally rust tones with a wash or with pigments. While handling it, bear in mind that a stretched strip springs and that its edges are sharp.
