A masking set meant for painting the road wheels of the Soviet BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle and of its BMP-1P version with an anti-tank system. This is neither a kit nor a replacement part, but an aid for spraying: the masks cover the rim of the wheel, so the rubber tire band can be sprayed in a dark shade with no hand lining by brush. The set is cut for the kit from Trumpeter, because the diameters and the shape of the wheels differ between manufacturers of the same subject.
The BMP-1 carries six fairly small road wheels per side with a strikingly lightened, pressed rim, plus return rollers, a drive sprocket at the front and an idler wheel at the rear. There are many wheels and they are small, so the ratio of tire band length to rim area comes out unfavorably — it is precisely at small diameters that a hand-pulled brush stroke most often ripples, and the error is visible on all twelve wheels at once. The vehicle is amphibious and built low, the sides stay fairly open, so the running gear is clearly seen on a finished model. A clean border between rubber and metal is therefore a detail on the BMP-1 that carries the whole impression of the running gear.
The wheels of the BMP-1 can be left separate and glued to the suspension arms only once they are painted. The step with the masks therefore belongs logically right after the base coat on the hull: spray the wheels in one batch with the rest of the model, let the paint cure properly, and only then lay the masks on and add the shade of the tire bands. The wheels go back onto the model last of all, just before the tracks — while they are loose they can be turned and sprayed from every side, which is no longer possible on a finished running gear.
This is a masking accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
