About product

Object 704 photo-etched set, 1:35 (E.T. Model)

A photo-etched metal set intended for refining the detail of a plastic model of the Soviet Object 704 heavy self-propelled gun in 1:35 scale. It is an aftermarket accessory, not a kit of the vehicle. The metal parts replace plastic items wherever injection-molded plastic is unconvincing for its thickness, typically the grilles, the covers, the loops, the clamps, the tool brackets and other thin-walled items of the superstructure and the hull. The scope of the package follows the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The Object 704 was a Soviet prototype of a heavy self-propelled gun from the end of the Second World War. It was based on the chassis of a heavy tank and carried a 152 mm howitzer in a fixed superstructure whose steeply sloped front and side walls were meant to raise its resistance to hits. The machine never reached series production and remained a prototype, which has survived as a museum exhibit. It is exactly the strikingly shaped low superstructure that makes the subject a rewarding one, popular among modelers.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, never break them out, and level the remains of the tags with a fine file. Make the folds along the marked score lines, best in a photo-etch bender. They are glued with thin cyanoacrylate, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action, and on large parts a slow-setting epoxy proves useful. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a primer. On heavy vehicles it pays to build the final weathering up in layers, first a wash in the recesses, then drybrushing on the edges and finally dust pigments on the lower areas and the walking surfaces.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Soviet heavy Second World War vehicles
  • Modelers who want the maximum of detail on a prototype machine
  • More experienced modelers with experience of working with metal
  • Display and contest builds, and dioramas with the vehicle in the foreground

This is an accessory photo-etched set. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

A Soviet prototype of a heavy self-propelled gun from the end of the Second World War, with a 152 mm howitzer in a steeply sloped fixed superstructure. It was never produced in series.

No. These are photo-etched metal parts for refining the detail only. The plastic model has to be obtained separately.

With thin cyanoacrylate, which wicks into the joint. On large parts a slow-setting two-part epoxy is safer.

Yes, degrease it and spray it with a primer. On bare photo-etched metal the paint will not hold and rubs off during further handling.
