Self-adhesive masks for painting the road wheels of the T-34/85 tank in 1:35 scale. The set holds no part of the model — it is an aid that marks out the transition between the rubber tire band and the rim on the wheel. The set is cut for the kit from Academy. Take that warning seriously: separate T-34/85 masks in the same scale are cut for other manufacturers' kits, and the names differ in nothing else. The wheels of the individual kits diverge in diameter and in relief, so a mask for one kit need not fit another.
The T-34 carries five large road wheels on each side hung on Christie-type spring units and has no return rollers — the upper run of the track bears directly on the wheels. The gap between the first and the second wheel is visibly larger than the rest, which is characteristic of the vehicle's silhouette. In 1:35 scale the wheels are large and their circumference forms a long continuous line on the model; every stumble of the hand shows on it at first glance. With late production you commonly meet pressed wheels with pronounced ribs in the rim, so the border of the rubber adjoins a broken surface over which runny paint likes to spread.
Anyone lining a tire band freehand with a brush usually ends up with ten lines of differing width — and because the wheels are side by side, the differences can be compared at a single glance. The second common mistake is laying the paint on too thickly: it runs over the edge and fills the scribed transition, so the wheel loses its modeling. The third is painting the wheels only once they are glued to the hull, when the inner faces and the lower part are out of reach. A mask works against all three — the border is set by the shape of the cutout rather than by a steady hand, and a mask once stuck down will take spraying in thin coats. Press it down all the way around so the paint cannot bleed, and lift it off while it has flashed off.
