About product

Unicef flags 1:35 – a printed accessory for a diorama

This is a printed paper sheet from ETA diorama for scenes in 1:35 scale. A flag is one of the few elements in a diorama that is allowed to be downright soft and irregular, and that is why it works so well. Paper has a fundamental advantage here over both plastic and photo-etch: it can be shaped by hand, it holds its shape without springing back and in 1:35 scale it has a suitable thickness.

Shaping a flag so that it does not look like a plate

First go lightly over the whole area of the cut-out motif with PVA glue thinned with water, or instead back it with a piece of thin aluminum foil – from a drink cap, for example. The foil inside holds the shape, so the flag can fly, bend in a gust of wind or hang limply along the pole. Form the shape while the paper is still damp and let it dry in the position you want. Watch out for symmetry: do not make the waves regular, real fabric moves irregularly. Glue double-sided flags face out over the foil, so that white paper does not glare from the back.

Fitting and aging

Make the pole yourself from steel wire, a needle or a plastic rod and glue the flag to it with a narrow strip of paper wrapped around the pole. On a vehicle, a roof or a fence a flag can also be fixed directly with super glue applied to the wire, not to the paper. Washed-out fabric faded by the sun is common with flags, so mute the surface carefully with dry pastel, fray the edges gently with abrasive paper and round the corners off. Matte clear coat at the end removes the paper sheen and fixes the patina. In a scene a flag states clearly what type of mission it is and it suits convoys, aid camps and buildings alike.

Who the sheet is for

  • builders of present-day dioramas in 1:35 scale
  • modelers who build scenes of convoys, camps and supply missions
  • authors of display cases where a single detail has to explain the context of the whole scene
  • anyone after shapeable paper flags instead of stiff plastic parts

It is a printed paper accessory for a diorama. Glue, paints, clear coats, wire and the other material of a scene are not included in the package.

FAQ

No, it is printed paper. Once backed with thin foil, though, it can be shaped much like fabric and it holds the shape.

It is not. You make the pole yourself from wire, a needle or a plastic rod and glue the flag to it.

Glue two motifs face out over an inserted piece of foil. White paper then does not glare from the back.

Shape it while the paper is damp and avoid regular waves. Real fabric moves asymmetrically.
