About product

Standing helicopter pilots 1:35 - CMK resin figures

A pair of castings in modeling resin in 1:35 scale from the maker CMK. It is not a kit of a machine but a figure accessory. The most important fact the set has right in its designation: the figures are standing. That is decisive for the purchase, because pilot figures are commonly made in two entirely different forms and the two cannot be swapped.

The figures and placing them

A seated pilot is modeled for a seat, with the legs angled and the back resting against the backrest, and cannot be used outside a cockpit. A standing pilot, by contrast, is a whole figure to be stood on a surface beside the machine, at the nose, at an open door or at the landing gear. This set is of the second type. You will get it into a cockpit only by a radical modification of the casting, which it is better not to count on. In a scene, on the other hand, it works excellently: beside a helicopter it gives the machine a scale the viewer otherwise cannot judge, and you do not have to open up and detail the interior for it. Ideally stand both figures turned toward each other and lean one against the fuselage.

Working with the casting

Cutting off the casting blocks under the feet is the key step with standing figures, as that is where it is decided whether the figure will stand straight. Cut with a fine-toothed saw, level the surface on abrasive paper laid on a flat board and check the casting on glass. On taller standing figures it works well to drill a hole into the soles and glue a wire pin into the base; glue alone has too little grip on the area of a sole. The parting line runs along the sides and across the harness of the flying suit; sand gently and restore the edges of the straps with a knife. Wash in warm water with detergent before painting. Sand with respiratory protection.

Painting

A flying suit is a single color, so the modeling has to be created with paint: a thin wash into the folds and brightening of the raised surfaces, otherwise the figure looks like a flat casting. The helmet is rewarding, as the matte surface of the shell against a glossy visor creates a contrast that brings the figure to life at once. Go over the visor with gloss clear coat at the very end.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of 1:35 helicopter models who want figures beside the machine
  • Modelers who care about the scale of a scene without detailing an interior
  • Those who want to try painting a single-color flying suit and a helmet
  • More experienced builders, as resin is cut, sanded and glued with cyanoacrylate

The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. According to the name this is the standing form, that is whole figures to be stood beside the machine. A seated pilot is a different type of casting and the two cannot be swapped.

They give the machine a scale the viewer otherwise cannot judge, and you do not have to open up and detail the interior of the cockpit for it.

Drill a hole into the soles and glue a short wire pin into the base. The area of a sole is too small for glue alone.

A thin wash into the folds and brightening of the raised surfaces. Contrast is then added by the matte shell of the helmet against a visor gone over with gloss clear coat.
