A model of the American shipborne Phalanx close-in weapon system in the Block IA version, 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Phalanx is a close-in weapon system that forms the last line of defense aboard US Navy ships against anti-ship missiles and low-flying targets. What makes it unusual is that it works on its own: under the conspicuous white radome it has its own radar, with which it both finds and tracks the target, and it decides to open fire without help from the ship's systems. The fire is delivered by a six-barrel 20 mm rotary cannon, which lets it put a short but dense burst in the path of the target. The Block IA designation distinguishes one of the development versions of the whole family.
This is a model of the weapon system itself in 1:35 scale, a size at which the complexity of the mount, the radome and the barrel cluster all stand out. At this scale the system works well as a stand-alone display piece, on a section of deck or in a scene with figures. Go through the number of parts, the material, the way the parts are made and whether the package holds decals in the manufacturer's instructions.
Leave the radome light and clean; heavy soiling does not belong on it, whereas the lower part of the mount will take traces of salt and rust. Line the barrels up on one axis and wash and degrease the whole model before painting. The model, the paints and the glue needed for it are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
