Seven resin sections of a wall of earth-filled sandbags. The quickest field fortification there is, covering a machine-gun nest, the entrance to a shelter or the parapet of an observation post.
Responsibility details are not available.
For a whole century a bag filled with earth was the most available element of field fortification. Empty burlap could be tied into a bundle, brought up to a position and filled on the spot, so that within a few hours a wall grew out of bare ground which absorbed splinters and an infantry round alike. That is how machine-gun nests were covered on the Western Front, how the entrances to cellar shelters in bombed cities were faced and how the parapets of observation posts were strengthened.
The package holds seven resin parts that form finished sections of the wall. The individual bags have sagging bellies, rounded corners and a suggested seam, thanks to which once painted they do not read as a row of identical blocks. The segments can be set one behind another into a longer wall or turned at a right angle around an entrance.
Fresh burlap has a warm ocher tone. A few weeks in the sun bleach it to gray-beige, while in damp it darkens instead, goes green with mold and the fabric tears at ground level so that earth spills out of the bag. It is exactly the difference between the upper and the lower course that makes a view credible, as does a brown filter in the joints and dry dust on the edges.
The scale is 1:35, that is the same one in which infantry figures and armored vehicles are built. The wall can therefore be built straight up against a vehicle or a weapon crew.
A wall is best braced against something solid, against the corner of a masonry building, against a stump or against the edge of an excavation. A freestanding wall in the middle of a meadow looks like scenery, whereas a wall that joins the terrain convinces at once. The bags were moreover laid in a staggered bond like bricks, because otherwise the wall came apart after the first hit.
