An assembly crane is the heart of every workshop, and in a diorama it works exactly the same way. This prop from MAiM represents a workshop lifting crane in 1:35 scale, around which a scene of a vehicle being repaired naturally builds up: an engine lifted out, service covers open, mechanics in overalls and tools scattered about. It is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted.
The crane comes into its own in a tank repair shop, a field depot, a garage or a civilian car workshop, in historical as well as modern settings. Repair subjects are among the most rewarding for a viewer, because they let you show a vehicle stripped down, with its innards exposed, and figures doing meaningful work instead of merely posing. Fill the crane out with other props of the same range, such as cabinets, pallets or cable drums, and the workshop starts to live a working life of its own.
After cleaning up and priming, reach for industrial shades, gray, blue or yellow, and let the structure be honestly scuffed: chipping laid on with a sponge on the edges, graphite on the wear points, a dark wash in the joints and oil stains at the foot of the structure. Pull the hook and the chain out in metallic shades, and pigments in the color of dust will then settle the crane onto the floor of the workshop so that it does not look merely placed there.
