The set replaces the plastic barrel of the assault howitzer of 10.5 cm caliber and supplements it with a welded angular mantlet. It is precisely the execution of the mantlet that is the key recognition mark on late vehicles of this type, so the set deals with the accuracy of the shape and the look of the barrel at the same time. The model is not part of the package.
The product is intended for the Dragon kit. That is bought separately.
The StuH 42 was a variant of the German assault gun on the Ausf.G chassis, in which a howitzer of 10.5 cm caliber replaced the gun. The vehicle was meant for direct fire support of infantry against fortified and soft targets, where a heavier shell had a greater effect than anti-tank ammunition. Late vehicles were delivered with two types of mantlet: a cast rounded one and a welded angular one. This set matches the welded execution.
An angular welded mantlet has crisp edges and visible welds, which injection-molded plastic rounds off. The barrel of the howitzer is short and thick, so the parting seam is particularly noticeable on it and sanding it down spoils the cylindrical shape. A metal barrel has the right cross section and a genuinely drilled muzzle.
Try the parts dry and make sure that the mantlet meets the front wall of the casemate with no gap; fill any gap with putty and draw the texture of the weld across it. Wash the metal before painting and spray it with a primer for metal. Apply the basic shade thinly. Then bring the edges of the mantlet out with a lighter dry brush and put a dark wash into the welds; darken the muzzle with pigment.
These are parts for a kit you have already bought. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
