A metal barrel machined on a lathe, which replaces the plastic part of the light field howitzer of 10.5 cm caliber in a kit. It offers a shape on axis, crisp edges and a genuinely drilled muzzle. The set does not hold a model; it reckons with a kit of this vehicle already bought.
The Heuschrecke was a German development vehicle from the later part of the war built on a chassis derived from a medium tank. It carried a light field howitzer of 10.5 cm caliber in a removable turret: the concept reckoned with the turret and the weapon being taken off and used away from the vehicle as a field position too. Only a few prototypes came about and the machine never reached series production, so this is a markedly unusual modeling theme.
A short barrel of a howitzer is difficult in plastic: the parting seam runs exactly along the most visible part of the piece and sanding it down spoils the cylindrical shape and the transition to the breech. Metal does away with those defects and adds a drilled bore, which is clearly apparent even from a distance on a large caliber.
Try the part dry first and make sure that it passes through the hole in the mantlet with no play and points along the axis. The hole can be widened carefully with a drill. Wash the metal in warm water with detergent because of the film of oil left by machining, let it dry and lay on a primer for metal. Glue with cyanoacrylate in drops. Bring the muzzle out at the end with dark pigment or graphite.
This is a replacement part for a kit you have already bought. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
