About product

Photo-etched Schürzen for the Jagdpanzer IV L/70(A) in 1:35 scale from E.T. Model

A set of photo-etched parts in 1:35 scale aimed at the side armor skirts, that is the Schürzen, for the plastic kit of the German Jagdpanzer IV L/70(A) tank destroyer. Plastic skirts are always disproportionately thick in this scale and have blunt edges as well, whereas photo-etched sheet matches the real thickness and looks convincing even in profile. The hangers and the carrying rails from which the skirts hung are usually included as well. The set is not a kit and the base model is not included in the package.

The real subject

The Jagdpanzer IV L/70(A) was a German tank destroyer that combined the chassis and hull of the Panzer IV medium tank with a tall armored superstructure and a long 75 mm gun with a barrel 70 calibers long. It came about as an interim solution at a time when heavily armed tank destroyers had to be got into service quickly. The vehicle had a tall profile and was markedly overloaded at the front, but thanks to the long gun it could destroy Allied tanks at long range. The side skirts protected the running gear and the sides of the hull, which were vulnerable to fire from anti-tank rifles and to shaped-charge ammunition.

Building and painting tips

The skirts look best when they are not perfectly straight. The real plates bent and tore away, so a slight ripple and a missing piece on one hanger will bring the build to life. Form the metal over a round object or between your fingers, but carefully, so that no sharp crease appears. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer. The skirts were often painted differently from the rest of the vehicle and rusted quickly along the edges, which can be put to use in the weathering.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of German Second World War vehicles
  • Builders who want realistically thin side skirts
  • More experienced modelers with experience of forming photo-etched parts
  • Dioramas from the last years of the war

The package holds photo-etched parts, not a kit of the vehicle. The base model, glue and paints are not part of the delivery.

FAQ

No. The set holds photo-etched side skirts and the related parts. The plastic kit of the tank destroyer has to be obtained separately.

Side armor skirts hung along the hull and the running gear, which protected the sides of the vehicle against fire from anti-tank rifles and against shaped-charge ammunition.

They look more realistic slightly rippled and with a piece missing. The real plates often bent and fell off in service.

Degrease them and spray a primer first. In practice the skirts were also painted differently from the vehicle and rusted quickly along the edges, which can be put to use in the weathering.
