About product

Voyager Model 1:35 — metal barrel 75 mm StuK 40 L/48 with a Saukopf mantlet, pattern 1

The package holds a turned metal accessory for building the German StuG III Ausf.G assault gun of late production in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle and not a finished model — it is a replacement part, which the modeler uses in place of the plastic barrel from the base kit. That therefore has to be obtained separately.

The real subject

The StuG III Ausf.G is the late production version of the German assault gun built on the chassis of the Panzer III tank. The main armament was a 75 mm StuK 40 gun with a barrel 48 calibers long. Late vehicles received, instead of the angular welded mantlet, a cast streamlined shielding of the barrel, for whose shape the designation Saukopf took hold. It is precisely this combination of barrel and mantlet that the set reproduces.

Why a metal barrel instead of a plastic one

An injection-molded barrel is put together from two halves, so it carries a parting gap along its whole length. When you sand it down, the fine stepping of the surface goes with it and the barrel often narrows or ripples slightly. A turned metal part is finished in one piece, has an exactly circular cross section, holds its straightness even over a greater length and the muzzle is drilled to a real depth. Both filling and sanding fall away and the result is the same every time.

Fitting and painting tips

Degrease the part with spirit before gluing and let it dry thoroughly — neither glue nor paint holds on greasy metal. Metal is glued with cyanoacrylate in small drops, and on heavier assemblies more reliably with two-part epoxy. Never apply paint straight onto bare metal; use a base meant for metal surfaces first, otherwise the layer will peel off at the first touch.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the StuG III Ausf.G of late production in 1:35 scale
  • Builders of dioramas where the barrel is seen from close up
  • Anyone who does not want to sand the parting gap on a plastic barrel
  • More experienced modelers working with metal accessories

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which is not part of the package. Glue, paints and other materials are not enclosed.

FAQ

It is not. This is an add-on set — a metal barrel, which the modeler builds into a plastic kit. The kit itself has to be bought separately.

After degreasing with spirit, with cyanoacrylate applied in drops, and on heavier parts with two-part epoxy. Ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal.

Yes. Paint adheres badly to bare metal, so use a base coat meant for metal surfaces and let it cure properly.

The manufacturer offers several variants for this subject. Compare the differences between them against documentation for your particular build.
