A plastic kit of the American heavy cruiser USS Salem in 1:350 scale from the manufacturer Very Fire. This is a complete ship kit to be assembled and painted, not an accessory for another model. The large hull and broken-up superstructures leave room for detailing, but they also make demands on clean work and on space in a display case.
The USS Salem belonged to the Des Moines class, the last and largest class of American gun heavy cruisers, completed only after the Second World War. The main armament consisted of 203 mm guns with automatic loading, supplemented by dual-purpose 127 mm guns and light anti-aircraft armament. The Salem served in the Mediterranean among other places and after withdrawal she became a museum ship; she is the only surviving heavy cruiser of this type. For a modeler that is an advantage, because the details of the deck fittings can be compared with a surviving vessel.
Plan the build according to whether you want the model full-hull on a stand or waterline on a base. Fill and sand the joint of the hull halves before painting. Paint the deck and the hull before you fit the superstructures, the boats and the cranes; you will not reach the lower surfaces later. Fine parts of railings, ladders and antennas look better in photo-etch than in plastic, and the barrels can be replaced with turned metal ones; both are sold separately. The uniform gray finish of postwar ships calls for careful surface preparation, because every scratch or fingerprint shows under it. Keep the weathering moderate; fine emphasis of the edges and a hint of streaking under the hawses are enough.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
