About product

Metal barrels 102 mm QF Mk XVI, 1:350 scale (Flyhawk)

A set of eight turned metal barrels of the British quick-firing gun of 102 mm caliber, that is 4 inches, in the Mk XVI version. The product belongs among turned barrels and accessories for ship models in 1:350, so it is an accessory for a plastic kit rather than a ship model. The metal barrels replace the plastic parts from the mold and remove their two usual weaknesses, that is the lengthwise trace of the parting line and the blind end of the muzzle. Eight pieces in the set are enough for four twin mountings.

The real gun

The quick-firing gun of 4 inch caliber in the Mk XVI version was a widespread anti-aircraft weapon of the Royal Navy in the Second World War. It was used on a broad spectrum of vessels from escorts through cruisers to large units, and it was usually carried in twin mountings distributed along the sides of the superstructures. Because there tended to be several of them on deck, what shows on a model above all is a uniform look to the barrels.

Fitting and painting

Cut the plastic barrels off at the mounting mask, sand the areas and open the holes out with a micro drill to the diameter of the pin. With smaller calibers work up from a thinner drill, as the thin plastic wall otherwise cracks. Glue the metal parts in with gel cyanoacrylate glue, which does not run into the surroundings. On twin mountings level both barrels to the same elevation and watch that they are parallel. Degrease the parts before painting and apply a primer for metal, otherwise the paint rubs off during ordinary handling of the model.

Who the set suits

  • Builders of Royal Navy ship models in 1:350.
  • Modelers finishing the anti-aircraft armament in detail.
  • Collectors who are bothered by an uneven look to plastic barrels.
  • More experienced builders used to micro drilling and cyanoacrylate glue.

The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Eight barrels correspond to four twin mountings; on single positions they are enough for eight pieces.

Approximately 102 mm. British naval artillery is given in inches in period sources, which is why the name carries both figures.

Open the hole left by the cut-off plastic barrel out with a micro drill to the diameter of the pin and glue the metal part in with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy.

No. It is a set of replacement barrels for a plastic model; the model itself is not in the package.
