An injection-molded plastic kit of a ship in 1:400 scale from the Polish manufacturer Mirage Hobby. The real subject is the ORP Mors, a base minesweeper of the Polish navy. For ship models 1:400 is a space-saving scale — the finished model takes up little room on a shelf, but it offers a distinct silhouette and readable main elements of the superstructure and the deck equipment. The package holds plastic parts and decals; paints, glue and a stand are not included.
The base minesweepers of the Soviet Project 254 (in Western designation the T-43 type) came into being in the 1950s and in several navies of the Eastern bloc formed the backbone of the mine countermeasures forces. They were fairly large units intended for long service on the open sea, not only in coastal waters. Their task was to find and destroy moored as well as bottom mines with towed sweeps — mechanical, magnetic and acoustic. Besides the mine countermeasures equipment they carried light gun armament for defense against aircraft and could also carry out patrol and escort duties. In the Polish navy the ships of this series served for decades and their appearance is typical of the postwar era of the Cold War.
Decide at the start whether you will build the full hull or the so-called waterline version cut at the waterline for setting into a water surface. The parts in a small scale are thin — separate them with a razor saw or a sharp scalpel and sand the flash off with fine abrasive paper. We recommend undercoating the hull and the superstructures with primer, and only then spraying the basic shades. It is practical to paint the decks and the superstructures separately and to glue them together only at the end. Photo-etched railings and ladders are a suitable addition and in this scale they markedly raise the impression the model makes. Apply a gloss varnish under the decals and go over it with a matte one once it has dried. Choose the patina sparingly — a fine wash into the details of the superstructure and light rust traces on the hull are enough.
