Masking set for the Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 in Italian service, 1:48 scale. The cockpit glazing is covered from both faces and there is one insignia stencil in the box.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Gustav appeared over the Apennine peninsula in two different roles. First it was flown by the German fighter formations defending Sicily and southern Italy; after 1943 Italian units fighting on further north took it over as well. It is the second chapter that is tempting for a modeler, because a machine of a familiar shape carries entirely different insignia and different camouflage from the thousand-times-seen examples from the Eastern Front.
Why only one insignia stencil. The Italian insignia was single-colored, so it is sprayed in one go and a second layer of stencil is of no use. The smaller content is not a shortcoming but a consequence of what was actually painted on the aircraft.
The decision before buying. Anyone building the ordinary German form of the Gustav should reach for a set with a pair of insignia stencils, because a German cross needs both a light fill and a dark outline. Anyone aiming at the Italian scheme gets exactly the shapes needed.
The cockpit. The glazing is cut for the outside and the inside, so a model can have the canopy slid back. The work takes twenty minutes and the edges come out the same around the whole perimeter, which on the angular framing of a Gustav hardly ever works out freehand.
One peculiarity of the Gustav. Above the breeches of the machine guns this type carries a pair of prominent bulges on the engine cowling and the windscreen begins immediately behind them. In that place the film is laid across a curvature running in two directions at once, so press it down from the center toward the edges and let it settle for a moment before you reach for the airbrush.
