A photo-etched detail set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale. Let us stress it right at the start: this is a photo-etched set of metal sheet, not resin castings of engines. The set does not hold replacement engines as a whole, but fine metal parts with which the engine units of a model are completed and refined — injection-molded plastic parts cannot capture the thin sheet elements that are most visible on a radial engine with a cowling and with an air outlet. On a four-engined aircraft the detail is also repeated four times, so the result tells on the model at once. The set is an accessory to a model, not a kit. Check the match with your kit in advance against the details on the packaging of the set.
The Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress is an American four-engined all-metal heavy bomber from the period of the Second World War. It was driven by four radial engines in nacelles on the wing, completed with turbochargers for operation at high altitudes. The F version is told from the older series above all by the one-piece clear cover of the forward part of the fuselage without dividing frames.
Cut the parts off the fret with photo-etch scissors or cut them out with a scalpel on a hard surface. Make the bends in a bending tool; on small parts tweezers with flat jaws help. They are glued with super glue or epoxy; cement for plastic will not join metal. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it over with a primer. Finish and paint the engine sections before you cover them with the engine cowlings — once they are closed, working with tweezers inside a nacelle is practically impossible. Metal surfaces are brought to life by a dark wash and fine drybrushing.
