About product

TFace masks for the B-17F Flying Fortress in 1:48 scale from the Eduard brand

This is not a kit of the aircraft and not a photo-etched set, but a set of masking templates cut out of yellow kabuki tape. The difference against the standard masking set lies in the designation TFace: it holds masks not only for the outer but also for the inner side of the glazing. Thanks to that you can paint the frames of the glazing from both sides, so that bare clear plastic does not shine out from inside when you look into the cabin. Masking sets of this type cover the glazing and as a rule the tires of the wheels as well; check the exact range against the illustration on the packaging.

Why TFace masks are useful on a B-17F

The four-engined bomber has a glazed nose, a pilot cabin, side windows and gun turrets, that is, large surfaces into which there is a good view on a model on display. It is exactly there that the view from inside onto an unpainted frame shows up most. The inner masks at the same time protect the glazing from overspray when the interior is painted. In 1:48 scale the model is large enough for the difference to be recognizable in the result, and cutting the corresponding number of masks by hand would be tedious and inaccurate.

Usage tips

Proceed in this order: first stick the inner masks down, spray the interior shade, and only then stick the outer masks down and spray the camouflage. Lift the masks off with a scalpel or tweezers, touch them with your fingers as little as possible and, once they are stuck down, press them along the whole perimeter, best of all with a wooden toothpick. Apply the paint in several thin layers, because one heavy layer runs under considerably more easily. Take the mask off while the paint is only tacky, and do it with a pull at an angle back over itself, not straight up. Degrease the glazing before sticking, otherwise the tape will not hold.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who are bothered by unpainted frames visible from inside the cabin
  • Builders of large multiengined aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Those who pay attention to the interior and want to protect it from overspray
  • Modelers spraying with an airbrush, where the quality of a mask decides

The set holds masks only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

That the set holds masks for both the outer and the inner side of the glazing. The frames of the cabin can thus be painted from both sides.

No. It is a set of masking templates for painting a kit that has been built. The model is not in the package.

First the inner masks and the interior shade, then the outer masks and the camouflage. You will reduce the risk of overspray into the cabin by that.

The masks are cut for a particular kit. Check before buying, therefore, that the set matches the model you are building.
