About product

1:48 Bristol Beaufighter Mk.IF - photo-etched landing flaps

A set of photo-etched parts intended to replace the landing flaps on a model of the British Bristol Beaufighter Mk.IF aircraft in 1:48 scale from Eduard. It is not an aircraft kit nor its main parts, but an accessory. On aircraft models the landing flaps are among the parts where the difference between plastic and photo-etched sheet shows most: a plastic flap has a thick trailing edge and tends to be shaped as a single block, whereas a photo-etched set allows a flap to be built with a thin section, visible internal structure and in the lowered position.

The real subject

The Bristol Beaufighter was a British twin-engine aircraft with radial engines, which came about on the basis of the design of the Beaufort bomber. The Mk.IF version was the fighter variant for Fighter Command of the Royal Air Force and it became famous for the heavy gun armament concentrated in the nose. It was a large and sturdy machine with room for equipment and with performance sufficient for night operations. Its flaps were on the lower surface of the wing between the fuselage and the engine nacelles, and a parked aircraft often had them lowered on the ground, which is a more interesting position for a model than closed.

Building and painting tips

The original plastic flap has to be cut out of the wing, so expect sanding and possibly leveling the edge with a thin plastic strip. Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and make the bends in a bending tool. Attach the assembled flap only after the lower surface of the wing is painted, otherwise you cannot reach the inner ribs. The inside of the flap bay tends to be in the interior shade, not in the color of the lower surface. Finally a fine wash to bring out the ribbing and light dust on the lower surface will help.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want a model with lowered flaps
  • Builders bothered by the thickness of plastic flaps
  • More experienced modelers who are not afraid of cutting into a wing
  • Those interested in British aircraft of the Second World War period

It is not a model of an aircraft, but an accessory for one. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

Yes. The original plastic flaps have to be cut off and the edge leveled, and only then is the photo-etched replacement fitted.

It is not. The package contains only the photo-etched parts of the flaps; the model has to be your own.

The benefit is then minimal. The main point of the set is the possibility of building the flaps lowered and showing their internal structure.
