A photo-etched hedgerow cutter for the Cromwell in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Hauler adds the improvised device used in the Normandy bocage to a model.
Responsibility details are not available.
A small photo-etched set, not a kit. It is cut for the Tamiya kit and adds a hedgerow cutter mounted on the nose of the vehicle. It is on a part like this that photo-etch makes the most sense: it is a weldment of steel sections and teeth, which either could not be molded from plastic at all, or would come out as a shapeless block. Photo-etched sheet lets you keep the gaps between the teeth and the real slenderness of the structure.
The countryside in Normandy was divided up by dense hedges growing on earth banks. For armored vehicles it was an almost impassable obstacle - trying to drive over a bank reared the vehicle up and exposed the bottom of the hull. The answer was improvised cutters welded from sections and from material taken from beach obstacles, which were welded to the nose and made it possible to drive through a bank instead of over it.
The cutter is a projecting part in the most exposed place on the model, so glue it properly: roughen the area on the nose, dry-fit the parts and make the joint with a thicker super glue gel, which gives you time to line it up. Anyone who can solder will get a markedly stronger assembly. In color the cutter differed from the machine itself - it was an improvised structure, so it can be treated as bare metal with surface corrosion or as a piece sprayed over in haste. Do not forget the dust and the deposits of soil between the teeth, or the part will look as though it came from an exhibition.
This is an accessory for building a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
