This item is not an aircraft model but a resin replacement set of wheels for the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter kit in the C, G and J versions in 1:48 scale. The finish matches the early type. The main benefit of resin is that the wheel is cast in one piece and with sharper hub detail than a split injection mold allows. That removes both the gluing of two halves and the sanding of a seam across the tire tread, where detail is lost for good.
The Starfighter came about in the mid-1950s as a light and extremely fast aircraft with the emphasis on rate of climb. Its shape, that is the needle-like fuselage and the unusually small wing area, called for fairly high landing speeds and therefore for heavily loaded landing gear. In service the details of the wheels and tires changed between production batches, which is why the sets are made separately in an early and a late version. Choose carefully according to the particular machine you are building.
Wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap before gluing. The casting block tends to be on the mating surface of the wheel; cut it off with a saw and level the remainder by drawing it across sandpaper laid on glass or on a board, so that the surface stays flat. Take care with the tread when sanding, as it is easily lost. Glue the wheel to the leg with super glue and keep checking that it stands square and that the model does not rest on one wheel only. Circular masks work well for painting, and on the hub a slightly lighter shade than the surrounding structure helps the detail stand out.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the basic kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
