A set of technical inscriptions in 1:48 scale for a model of the American Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat carrier fighter. These are not classic decals: the wet transfers from the maker HGW are carried onto the surface without a carrier film, so once dry they have no glossy outline around the printing and look as if printed into the finish. The stencil markings are the small maintenance and service inscriptions with which the real aircraft was densely covered.
It is precisely the small technical inscriptions that make the difference on a model between a toy and a scale replica. In 1:48 they are already clearly legible and the eye looks for them. With classic decals, however, the trouble is that every inscription carries a piece of transparent film and that silvers on a matte finish. A wet transfer has no such layer, so it can be used on a matte or satin surface as well and needs no gloss area around it.
First degrease the surface and let the paint harden completely. Trim the motif, lay it in place and, following the enclosed instructions, dampen it and press it down so that the printing is carried onto the model. The backing paper is then peeled away and only the inscription itself is left on the surface. Work in smaller groups of inscriptions rather than over the whole sheet at once, and do not rush: a transfer can be straightened shortly after application but no longer once it has dried. Finally, even everything out with a thin coat of varnish of the degree of sheen you want.
