A photo-etched detail set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:48 scale for the American GMC CCKW-353 cargo truck of 2.5 ton capacity, in the version with the open cab. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory to a plastic model, which has to be owned separately. The metal parts replace thin sheet fittings – mesh, brackets, the frame of the cargo bed and small gear, where plastic looks coarse.
The GMC CCKW-353 was an American six-wheel-drive cargo truck of 2.5 ton capacity, built in hundreds of thousands. It became the main draft horse of Allied supply and grew famous above all for the unbroken convoys that kept the advancing units moving after the landings in Normandy. The version with the open cab came about to save steel and to make transport by ship easier – instead of a sheet-metal roof it had a folding canvas one and a windshield that folded down. The vehicle served in countless forms, from a flatbed to a tanker.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel and run the bends in a photo-etch bending tool along the scored lines. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue in the smallest possible amount. With the open cab you can see inside, so it pays to spend time on the interior and on the windshield frame. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer for metal. American vehicles are painted in an olive shade; the result is helped by a wash into the gaps, dusty pigments on the fenders and a load or a tarpaulin on the bed.
This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
