About product

Dora Wings 1:48 Granville P-45B Bee killer — plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the brand Dora Wings, supplemented by resin parts, photo-etched parts and masking templates. It is not a real historical aircraft: the P-45B Bee killer is a carefully thought-out what-if study, that is how a fighter might have looked if the army had taken over the design of the famous racing special built by the Granville brothers. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The basis is the Gee Bee racing aircraft from Granville Brothers Aircraft — a barrel-shaped machine with an enormous radial engine, a minimal fuselage and a cockpit pushed almost back to the tail, which won American air races in the 1930s and became as famous for its records as for being unmanageable. The fictional military version adds armament in the form of machine guns, whose barrels and breech covers are in the package as separate resin parts, together with US Army Air Corps markings. Anyone who wishes can take the model as a reminder of the golden years of air racing; anyone who wishes can take it as a purely modeling amusement.

Building and painting tips

Wash the mold release residue off the resin parts before gluing, cut off the casting blocks and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue; protect your airways when sanding resin. Dry-fit the short-run plastic parts. The surface is crucial: racing machines had smooth glossy finishes, so sand the joints carefully and use a primer. A striking color scheme with sharp transitions is best done by masking rather than with a brush. A small fuselage and a large engine mean that the whole model depends on matching the cowling to the fuselage carefully.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers who enjoy what-if subjects
  • Collectors of racing aircraft and of the Gee Bee family
  • Builders with experience of resin and photo-etched parts
  • Anyone who wants a shape in the display case that cannot be missed

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It did not. It is a what-if study, that is a fictional military version of the Gee Bee racing aircraft built by the Granville brothers.

Resin parts for the machine gun barrels and breech covers, photo-etched parts, masking templates and decals for US Army markings.

Rather not. Working with resin calls for cyanoacrylate glue, washing the mold release off the parts and care when sanding.

The key is a smooth base: sand the joints, spray a primer and apply the paint in thin coats. Make the sharp transitions by masking.
