About product

1:48 Krupp Protze, Kfz. 70 wheel masks (for the Tamiya kits)

This is not a kit or a set of replacement wheels, but an aid for painting. The masks cover the areas of the wheels that are to stay in a different shade, so that spraying gives you a sharp border with no painting in by hand. The set is listed for the Tamiya kits, because the shape of a mask follows particular parts.

What makes the running gear of this subject special

The Krupp Protze is a wheeled cargo vehicle, and that changes the whole approach to masking. Instead of dozens of small rollers you have several large wheels with a tire and a distinct rim in the middle. The front axle is steered and stands on its own; at the rear there are two axles close behind each other, so the rear part of the chassis looks crowded and little room is left between the wheels. A characteristic feature of this subject is also the wheels carried on the flanks of the bed behind the cab: they turn freely and serve to keep the vehicle from grounding on rough terrain. In practice that means you paint more wheels than the number of axles would suggest, and that some of them are visible from the side at eye level. The tires have an off-road tread that it helps to pick out with a dry brush once the masks are off.

Work plan before painting

With wheeled equipment it is almost always better to paint the wheels separately and fit them last. Before that, lay the masks on the parts on the sprue dry and check the diameter. Then wash and degrease the wheels, because on the smooth surface of a rim any bleeding is spotted at once. Apply a thin primer, which also evens out the shade of the plastic and reveals the marks of the mold parting line on the tire. Only then spray the tire color and, once it is unmasked, paint the rim in. Lay out the order of assembly so that the axles can be slid into place after painting, or you will reach the inner faces of the rear wheels only with difficulty.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German wheeled equipment in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want a clean border between tire and rim
  • Those building the vehicle for a diorama where the wheels are in the foreground
  • Anyone who cannot line a circular transition with a brush

The package contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Besides the wheels on the axles, the vehicle also has freely turning wheels carried on the flanks of the bed. Check the number of masks once you unwrap it.

With wheeled equipment it works well to paint the wheels separately and fit them last. There is little room between the rear axles and a finished vehicle is far harder to mask.

It cannot be relied on. The masks copy the diameter and detail of particular parts and are listed for the Tamiya kits.

It is not mandatory, but it helps a great deal. On a primed and degreased surface a mask holds evenly and paint does not run under the edge.
