Pre-cut kabuki masks for the glazing of the Japanese Starfighter in 1:48 scale, in the TFace version, that is from the outside as well as the inside.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lockheed F-104J came about as an interceptor version of the Starfighter tailored to the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force. Most of the two hundred machines were built under license by Mitsubishi, and at home the aircraft was given the nickname Eiko. It stayed in service from the beginning of the 1960s to the middle of the 1980s and its task was to get to altitude as fast as possible and intercept an intruder over the Japanese islands. It is exactly the slender canopy and the angular windshield that make its glazing one of the more laborious parts of the build.
The TFace designation means a double set of pieces. One half covers the glass from the outside, the other follows the same shapes on the inner side. The model can thus be sprayed on the inside in the cockpit color as well, without the frames being blurred or the typical show-through arising on a thin canopy. The masks are cut from kabuki paper, which does not lift on a bend and leaves no adhesive behind when removed.
Working with them is undemanding: a piece is lifted with tweezers, laid on dry and pressed down with a soft wooden stick. The paint is applied in thin coats, so that it does not get under the edge. Take the masks off while the paint has only just set, not once it has fully cured.
Fit the inner pieces before you glue the canopy to the fuselage, otherwise there is no getting at them. If you are building with the cockpit open, leave a thin strip of mask on the frame until the very end of the work; it will protect the edge from rubbing while the finished model is handled.
