The Skyhawk is a small aircraft and in 1:48 scale it makes a compact model on which every detail shows all the more. The basic level of the masking set from New Ware covers the main areas that are masked off before spraying. According to its name the set is cut for the E, F and K versions. It is the narrowest item in its range, which makes it a good way to try masking out.
Without a mask the modeler has two options, and both have a catch. Outlining with a brush calls for a steady hand and the result is judged under a magnifier. Cutting tape on a small part means strips a millimeter wide that adhere badly and shift easily. A pre-cut mask does away with both, because it arrives finished in the right shape. On a small model this shows most, because the proportional error is greatest there.
Lift the small parts off the film with the point of a scalpel; tweezers sometimes bend a corner. Work over a light-colored surface on which a small part will not be lost. After applying it, run a wooden stick along the edges and do not use a fingernail to press it down, as the mark left by sweat reduces adhesion. Spray the paint thinly; on small areas very little is really needed. Take the mask off while the paint is freshly dried and check the clear part against the light at the end.
The package contains the masking set only. The kit, paints and glue are not included.
