Pre-cut covering for the glazing of the Japanese N1K1-Ja Shiden fighter in 1:48 scale. The film is prepared for the outer and the inner surfaces of the long canopy and matches the Hasegawa molding.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Kawanishi N1K1-Ja has an unusual pedigree: it was not laid out on the drawing board as a land-based fighter but converted from the Kyofu float combat aircraft. That is where the high-set wing comes from, and because of it the aircraft needed a complicated telescoping landing gear that shortened as it retracted. That gear was a constant source of trouble. The subversion with the Ja suffix moved four 20 mm cannons into the wing itself, so the ungainly gondolas under the lifting surface disappeared and with them part of the drag.
Above the cockpit runs glazing divided by ribs into several unequal panels, which narrows and drops toward the tail. Every pane therefore has a different outline from its neighbor, and a template cut by eye stands no chance here. Anyone who has tried to mask a canopy like this with tape knows that the job stretches over a whole evening.
The enclosed parts cover the glazing from both sides. The inner pieces let you spray the frames in the cockpit color before the canopy is glued on, which shows a great deal on Japanese machines with a dark green interior. The outlines are derived from the specific clear parts, so nothing has to be measured out.
It pays to seat the parts on the fixed sections of the glazing first, since they serve as a guide, and to leave the sliding section for last. Lay the paint on in two or three thin coats. A heavy coat builds a ridge along the edge that stays as a visible step once the film is lifted, and it is hard to paint over.
