An injection-molded plastic kit of the American Grumman OV-1A/JOV-1A Mohawk observation and reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale from Roden. The kit makes it possible to build the basic observation OV-1A as well as the armed JOV-1A. The subject is captured by the glazed bubble canopy with side-by-side seats and by the unmistakable triple vertical tail surfaces. The box offers engraved panel lines and external stores (rocket pods and containers), which let the model be built in its armed form.
The OV-1 Mohawk was an American two-seat observation and reconnaissance turboprop aircraft of the US Army, deployed among other places in the Vietnam War. It was powered by a pair of turboprop engines, and the crew consisted of a pilot and an observer seated side by side in a well glazed cockpit with an excellent view. The machine was used for combat reconnaissance, battlefield surveillance and photo reconnaissance; the armed JOV-1A version carried external stores for light attack duties.
Finish and paint the cockpit with its side-by-side seats first, because once the fuselage is closed and the large glazing fitted there is no access to it. The segmented glazing of the bubble canopy is easier to spray with masks, which can be obtained separately; glue the plastic with liquid modeling cement and sand the joints back. Lay down a primer before painting. The Vietnam schemes in olive shades are best handled with an airbrush; fit the rocket pods and containers only after painting. Washes and dry pigments at the end give the machine a realistic finish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
