Decals 1:48 for the Mustang of the ace Beerbower of the 354th Fighter Group and for the machine with the code CY-U of the 55th Fighter Group.
Responsibility details are not available.
The fighter escort over Germany changed at the moment when the Mustang received the British Merlin engine and with it a range that no other single-seat fighter had. Version B with a high spine and a framed canopy came first; version D then brought a bubble cockpit with all-round visibility. The sheet contains both and side by side they show how big a step that was.
The first set belongs to an aircraft of version B flown by Captain Donald Beerbower, one of the recognized aces of the 353rd Squadron of the 354th Fighter Group of the Ninth Air Force. His Mustang carried the name Bonnie B II. The second set covers a later machine of version D from the 25-NA series with the code CY-U and the name Gunfighter, which flew with the 343rd Squadron of the 55th Fighter Group.
The order of laying: with the Mustang it has proved best to start from the national insignia on the wing, because they set the position of everything else. Only then come the code letters on the fuselage and finally the personal inscription under the cockpit. The opposite procedure usually ends with one of the designs left with nowhere to go.
Escort fighters were for the bomber crews a visible sign that the way home had a chance. The personal names on their noses were therefore not just decoration but a way for a pilot to mark the machine to which he entrusted his life. A model with faithful markings keeps that dimension better than the finest painting.
