A preacher speaking from a crate and a knot of listeners who loudly agree with him. A street scene in a ratio of 1:87.
Responsibility details are not available.
The speaker has stood up on an ordinary shipping crate and preaches with such fervor that the gathering agrees out loud. The group brings the speaker and his audience together into one scene, so what arises on a layout is not a cluster of random figures but a scene with a clear center of attention.
Street preaching was an ordinary part of life in American small towns and dockside districts. People spoke from a crate, from the bed of a wagon or from a flight of steps, because whoever stood higher was heard further. The audience formed itself out of passers-by and dispersed as quickly as it had gathered. For a modeler it is a rewarding subject: it allows figures to be clustered in a small area and at the same time explains why they are all standing there.
The set is reduced to a ratio of 1:87, so it matches the usual size of buildings and vehicles on a model railroad. A suitable place is the corner of a square, the open space in front of a station or a free area by a market hall.
What is essential is the way they are turned: all the listeners' heads have to point toward the speaker, otherwise the scene falls apart into several unrelated figures. Uneven distances of the individual figures from the crate help too, with the absorbed ones closest and further off those who have only stopped on their way past.
