About product

Wheels for the Panavia Tornado in 1:48 scale, tire type a (Armory)

This resin set replaces the landing gear wheels on a Panavia Tornado model in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory for building one. The manufacturer lists wheels for the Tornado in two forms according to the tire tread, and this item is variant a, so if you are building a particular machine from a photograph, compare the tread pattern before buying.

The real subject

The Panavia Tornado is a twin-engined combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, developed by an international consortium and brought into service at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. It was operated in strike, reconnaissance and interceptor versions and served for several decades, which means a great many differences between individual machines and periods. The landing gear wheels are among the parts that wear the most on a long-serving type, and that can be put to good use on a model.

Fitting and painting tips

After washing the mold release agent off the casting, cut the casting block off and level the surface. The hub and the tire are painted separately: the simplest procedure is to spray the whole wheel in the hub shade, cover it once dry with a circular mask or masking fluid and spray over the tire in dark gray. Pure black looks too hard in scale; a dark gray with a hint of dusting on the sidewalls is better. It is glued with cyanoacrylate, and glue the wheel on only once the landing gear leg is finished, so that it can be turned correctly.

Who the set is for

  • builders of Tornado models who work out the landing gear in detail
  • modelers comparing their build with a period photograph of a particular machine
  • anyone interested in a quick improvement to the look of a model without touching the fuselage
  • users accustomed to working with resin and masking hubs

The set is a modeling accessory, not a model of the aircraft. It is supplied unpainted and without glue; the base kit is not included in the package.

FAQ

The variants differ in the tire tread pattern, which on the subject varied according to the tire maker and the period of service. This item is variant a.

The contents of the package are given on the box of the set.

Avoid pure black. A dark gray base, fine dusting on the sidewalls and a slightly lighter contact patch look markedly more realistic in scale.

As a rule no, the wheels are fitted in the same place as the plastic ones. Always dry-fit the part, however, and adjust the diameter of the axle if need be.
