About product

Rhinoceros, hedgerow cutter 1:48 (Hauler)

The set is not a kit of a vehicle but a separate accessory in photo-etched sheet from the Czech maker Hauler. It concerns the so-called hedgerow cutter, that is an attachment with a toothed edge that during the fighting in Normandy was mounted on the bow of the hull of Allied tracked vehicles.

The real subject

Normandy fields were enclosed by tall earth banks with dense vegetation. For tracked hardware they were a serious obstacle, because in climbing over a bank the vehicle tipped and exposed its weakly armored belly. Field workshops therefore welded attachments with teeth out of steel material, often from collected beach obstacles, which broke through the bank. The modification spread in the summer of 1944 and arose in many workshop forms.

Why photo-etched parts in particular

The structure of the cutter is made up of thin flat strip and struts. In injection-molded plastic such sections would have to be markedly thickened to come out of the mold at all. Photo-etching keeps the real thickness of the material and the gaps between the teeth stay see-through, which on this modification is the most conspicuous detail.

Building and painting tips

Proceed according to the drawing in the instructions and bend from the smallest parts. Degrease the metal and fix the joints with thin cyanoacrylate applied with the tip of a wire. Because it is a field improvisation, the assembly will take a slight irregularity and lightly splayed teeth look credible. After the primer, unify the shade with the rest of the vehicle and add fine traces of rubbing and rust on the worn edges of the teeth.

Who the set is for

  • builders of hardware from the fighting in Normandy in 1944
  • modelers building a diorama with a hedgerow
  • anyone interested in field modifications and improvisations
  • modelers with experience of bending photo-etched parts

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It broke through an earth bank with vegetation, so that the vehicle did not have to climb over the obstacle and expose the belly of the hull in doing so.

It is not. It is only an accessory; the model itself has to be obtained separately.

The assembly calls for bending and gluing small metal parts, so it is more suitable for modelers who have already worked with photo-etched parts.

First a primer, then the base shade of the vehicle; on the edges of the teeth a fine metallic rubbing and a suggestion of rust suit well.
