A kit of the AT-3 jet trainer in the service of the Republic of China Air Force, in 1:48 scale. Freedom Model Kits has long devoted itself to Taiwanese aviation hardware, which is represented only marginally elsewhere, so this is a subject with few alternatives. The model is supplied as a conventional kit, that is unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The AT-3 is a two-seat jet aircraft developed by the Taiwanese manufacturer AIDC. It serves as an advanced trainer for pilot training and, in a modified form, for light combat tasks as well. In construction it is a high-wing monoplane with tandem seating and two jet engines placed in the wing roots. In the service of the Republic of China Air Force the aircraft holds the role of the main advanced trainer and is also used by an aerobatic team.

Building and painting tips

The tandem cockpit is very much on show on this type, because the glazing is extensive and the interior is clearly visible through it. It therefore pays to spend time on the inside, at least on the belts and the instrument panels. Mask the glazing and spray it together with the fuselage, so that the frames line up. Spray a gloss coat before the decals and, after them, even the whole thing out with a matte or semi-gloss overcoat. Check the joints at the wing roots and around the air intakes dry, as they are usually the places that need puttying and resanding.
