About product

Wheel wells for a model of the S-3A/B Viking in 1:48 scale

An extensive accuracy accessory of the Metallic Details brand, which replaces the plastic wheel wells of a model of the carrier-based S-3 Viking in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit: the modeler obtains the base model separately and part of the original plastic is cut away during fitting. The aim is to replace shallow spaces out of a mold with deep wells carrying drawn-out structure, that is with beams, ribs and pipe runs.

The real subject

The S-3 Viking was a carrier-based antisubmarine aircraft of the US Navy with two turbofan engines and a high-mounted wing. The S-3A version came about in the 1970s, and the later S-3B was given modernized avionics and widened armament; the end of its service belonged above all to air-to-air refueling duties. Because of operation from a deck the machine was equipped with robust landing gear with a long stroke and with roomy wells to match — and it is precisely those that are clearly visible from below on a model standing on its wheels.

Fitting and painting tips

Reckon on this being the most demanding kind of accessory. First wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry completely. Then try out dry, and repeatedly, how much plastic has to be taken off the fuselage and the nacelles; cut away in small steps, and better to try three times than to cut once. Wear a respirator while sanding and sand wet; the dust from castings is not to be breathed in. Paint and shade the wells before gluing them into the model; you will not reach inside with a brush later. A light base, a darker wash into the recesses and a dry brush on the edges all prove themselves; hydraulic runs can be suggested with thin wire. Glue with superglue and let the finished assembly cure in a jig with no stress, or the fuselage will twist.

Who the set is for

  • experienced modelers who are not afraid of cutting into a kit
  • builders of US Navy carrier aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • modelers displaying the machine on its wheels, where the underside is visible
  • anyone interested in the greatest possible degree of detail in the landing gear spaces

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, which it does not hold. Paints, glue and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

You do not. This is an accessory to a plastic kit, which has to be bought separately.

Yes, reckon on it. The original shallow wells are taken off the model, so that space is made for the deep parts of the set. Cut away gradually and keep trying dry.

Before gluing them into the model. Once the fuselage is closed you will practically not reach the interior spaces with a brush and the shading could not be finished.

For the advanced. The work involves cutting, wet sanding with respiratory protection, gluing with superglue and exact positioning of the assembly with no stress.
