A set of self-adhesive masking templates from Eduard for a model of the Sikorsky HH-34J helicopter in 1:48 scale, from the range of masks intended for this scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a model of the helicopter but a set of pre-die-cut self-adhesive masks from the Czech manufacturer Eduard. The item belongs to its range of masks for 1:48 scale. The masks are of kabuki paper, that is thin Japanese masking paper with a mild adhesive. On helicopters a masking set carries far more weight than on aircraft: the glazing is extensive, curved and broken up into many irregular shapes, so masking by hand is a lengthy job and mistakes are visible on a finished model.
The HH-34J is the rescue version of the Sikorsky helicopter derived from the S-58 type, which in its day was among the most widespread piston-engined helicopters. The engine is placed at the front in the nose and drove the main rotor through a shaft running diagonally upward, which is characteristic of the machine's silhouette. The cockpit is high above the nose and has large glazing, and that is what this set addresses.
Leave the clear parts washed and dry, with no polishing with abrasive paste. Lift the masks with tweezers and press them down around the perimeter with a toothpick. On the large curved areas of a helicopter cockpit it is crucial to lay the mask from the center out to the edges, so that no air bubble is trapped under it. Cover the remaining large areas of glazing that the masks do not address with masking tape or masking fluid. Apply the paint in thin coats. The frames of a helicopter are often of a different color inside and outside, so think the order of painting through in advance, so as not to have to mask the canopy twice.
The set holds masking templates. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
