A 1:48 decal sheet for the Supermarine Spitfire. It covers the trials machine MK210 with the name Tolly Hello and an aircraft of the VIII version named Pauline, which served in India in 1946.
Responsibility details are not available.
During the war British test flying had an airfield of its own in Wiltshire, where new types as well as modifications to established ones were evaluated. An American test section also operated there, whose pilots flew British machines and compared them with equipment from home. One of them flew a Spitfire with serial number MK210, on which the name Tolly Hello was painted. This very example is the first of the pair captured on the sheet.
The second machine is a Spitfire of the VIII form named Pauline, which flew with No. 2 Squadron in India a year after the war ended. The VIII version came about as a fully developed form for overseas theaters, with a fixed tail wheel, a longer fuselage and a modified cooling system, and in Asia it served longer than in Europe.
The IX version was a fast makeshift: a two-stage engine was fitted into the airframe of an earlier variant so that British aviation had something to answer German developments with. The VIII version, by contrast, was a considered design with a strengthened structure. A modeler therefore has to watch the shape of the cockpit cutout, the extraction flap under the nose and the length of the tail wheel leg according to the machine chosen.
On a Spitfire the roundels lie where the wing curves in two directions at once. Lay them on a well dampened area, press the excess water out toward the wingtip and only then reach for a decal softener.
Finally unify the dried markings with a matte top coat according to how well maintained each machine was. Trials examples tended to be polished, whereas aircraft in the tropics had paint that faded quickly.
