Masking film for the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX in 1:48 scale, for the outer and the inner face of the canopy, plus two sets for the national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Spitfire Mk IX arose out of necessity. When Focke-Wulfs appeared over France, British production joined the older airframe of the fifth series with a two-stage supercharged Merlin and thereby gained a machine that took the advantage at altitude back. From outside the change is inconspicuous; you recognize it mainly by the longer nose and the four-blade propeller. The cockpit stayed the familiar narrow teardrop with a side door and a flat front pane.
When a mask lies on glazing for a long time, it can leave a matte tacky bloom behind. You will not see it in a photograph, but the finished model thereby loses the one thing the glazing is masked for, namely transparency. It is not a fault of the film, only of the time and heat that soften the adhesive. Leave the mask on the model for as short a time as the work allows, then, and do not dry finished parts in direct sunlight or over a radiator.
Residues are cleaned with patience, not with force. Isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth is suitable; the bloom is gently wiped away with a circular movement. Aggressive thinners blind clear plastic. When a trace will not give way, polishing with products intended for plastic canopies comes next and finally a dip in gloss clear varnish, which closes up any microscratches.
Two canopy masks, one for the view from outside and the other for the inner face, and two sets intended for the national insignia. A plastic model of the matching version the builder obtains separately.
