Painting masks for the tropical Spitfire Mk V in 1:48 scale. The envelope holds an outer canopy stencil and a pair of sheets for the roundels.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Spitfire Mk Vb reached the Mediterranean and North Africa at a time when its European siblings were already beginning to fall behind. The tropical modification added a bulky dust filter under the nose, which cost the machine a few tens of kilometers of speed and at the same time gave it an unmistakable silhouette. It was in this form that Spitfires defended Malta and escorted convoys, often from take-off strips where the dust rose as high as a hangar roof.
Inside you will find one canopy stencil intended for the outer surface and a pair of sheets for the roundels. The inner face of the cockpit is not masked in this box, which on a thin 1:48 molding usually does no harm: the frame showing through from inside is so narrow that the eye does not pick it out once a matte coat has dried. Anyone wanting to see the framing under the glass as well should reach for a larger scale.
It is a compromise that suits most shelves. A fighter at this size still fits a display case beside twenty others and yet it carries the cockpit, the landing gear wells and the armament in reasonable detail. Smaller 1:72 already loses the small hatches, larger 1:32 asks for twice the space. The masks respect that balance: in 1:48 it is worth masking the outline of an insignia, because a hand-drawn line would look shaky at this size.
