Hexagonal acrylic bases 30 mm across in a clear finish. Acrylic is a rigid sheet with a smooth surface and a precisely cut edge, so the base holds its shape, does not bend and needs no further reinforcement.
A hexagon suits gaming boards divided into fields and, against a circle, has the advantage that the bases can be laid tight together without gaps. The clear finish suits anywhere the base should recede: under figures in a display case, under flying machines on a stem, and where you want to let the surface the model stands on show through. It can also be used as a replacement for a cracked original base or to make a group uniform where every figure has a different footing.
Fix the figure to the base before you start finishing the surface, otherwise it is hard to work around the legs. Cyanoacrylate glue holds on acrylic; cement for polystyrene does not work here, because it has nothing to soften. If you want to keep the clear area transparent, reach for a glue that leaves no white haze and apply it in the tiniest amount. If you paint the base, wash and degrease the surface first and lay down a primer, otherwise the finish rubs off.
