An injection-molded plastic kit of the German experimental jet aircraft Horten Ho 229 in 1:48 scale from the Japanese premium manufacturer Zoukei-Mura, from its well-known SWS range. The kit is marked by rich internal detail: it renders the load-bearing frame of the airframe as well as the pair of Junkers Jumo 004 turbojets, which thanks to the enclosed clear outer parts can be admired even on the finished model. As a bonus, an engine stand is in the package too. It is a demanding build meant for advanced modelers.
The Horten Ho 229 (the H.IX in development) was a German experimental jet flying wing from the end of the Second World War. It had no conventional fuselage and no tail surfaces; it was a pure flying wing powered by a pair of Junkers Jumo 004 turbojets. Its construction, with a mixed wood and metal airframe and smooth shapes, showed early traits of later stealth engineering (a low radar return). The aircraft stayed at the prototype stage and never saw mass production or combat.
The build follows the philosophy of the SWS range: first the internal frame and the engines are assembled and painted, and only then are the skin and clear parts closed up, so count on working from the inside out. It pays to paint and weather the internal structure and the Jumo 004 engines in detail, because they stay visible through the clear panels. Glue the plastic with thin modeling cement, the clear parts with canopy glue, and mask them before painting. The unusual shape of a flying wing rewards an airbrush: lay down a primer, apply the late German schemes in fine transitions and finish the surface with a wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
