A joint masking set for the British Mk VIII and Mk IX fighters in 1:48 scale. Besides masks for the glazing and the national insignia it contains a pair of metal cannons of twenty millimeters caliber with the fairings on the wing. For the Hasegawa kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mk VIII was the considered version with a strengthened structure, a retractable tailwheel and larger tanks in the leading edge; it flew mainly over the Mediterranean, Burma and Australia. The Mk IX was meant to be only a quick stopgap, but it was that one which ended up being built in ten times the number. Both marks share the shape of the glazing and the layout of the armament, and that is why the manufacturer covered them with a single set.
When you look into the muzzle of a real cannon from the front, you see a thin metal ring around a dark hole. In the chosen scale that wall works out at around a tenth of a millimeter, and that is the heart of the matter: an injection mold will not fill such a thin rim and the part would break off during ejection as well. The designer of a kit therefore thickens the barrel, closes it off and relies on nobody noticing. A turned tube has no such limitation, because it is not cast but machined from solid material. The result is a muzzle with a real ring and a real hole, that is exactly what a molding cannot offer.
The model is bought separately; the set contains only masking film and metal parts. Since it covers two marks at once, it also suits a modeler who does not yet know which of them he will finally build.
