About product

Hauler photo-etched set for the Staghound Mk.III in 1:48 scale

A set of photo-etched metal parts for detailing the plastic model of the Staghound armored car in the Mk.III version, in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle - the set completes one particular Bronco kit. With wheeled armored vehicles the impression a model makes is decided mainly by the outside of the hull: the fenders, the light guards, the eyes, the loops, the holders for the stowed equipment and the mesh areas. It is precisely these shapes that come out too massive in injection-molded plastic, and a photo-etched sheet replaces them at a thickness that matches the scale. The extent of the parts is not stated here.

The real subject

The Staghound was a heavy armored car developed and produced in the United States but used above all by British and Commonwealth units. It had four-wheel drive, two engines and, for its size, surprisingly good mobility. The Mk.III version differed markedly from the basic model: in place of the original turret it carried a turret taken from the Crusader tank with a 75 mm gun, which turned a reconnaissance car into a machine with substantially stronger fire support. The vehicles served in Italy and in northwestern Europe and, after the war, for a good many years more with other armies.

Building and painting tips

Proceed from the bottom upwards: first the details of the chassis and the fenders, then the hull and finally the turret, where it pays to leave the photo-etch until last, so that it does not break off while the model is handled. Separate the parts with a scalpel and run the bends along the line. Thin eyes and loops are best gripped with tweezers whose tips have been ground down. Apply super glue in a minimum, ideally with the tip of a piece of wire. The muted British green scheme looks better when the areas are lightened in the middle of the panels and the edges brought out with a dark wash. Dust on the wheels and the lower hull will ground the scene, but leave the main armor surfaces relatively clean.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building Allied armored cars
  • those interested in British equipment of the Italian and the northwestern theaters
  • builders of dioramas in 1:48 scale
  • modelers with experience of photo-etch who want to carry a model through to the display case

This is an accessory set, not a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory set for one particular plastic kit, from Bronco.

It carried a turret taken from the Crusader tank with a 75 mm gun in place of the original turret with armament of a smaller caliber.

From the bottom upwards. First the chassis and the fenders, then the hull and finally the turret, so that the small parts do not break off during the build.

A scalpel, a hard surface, tweezers with ground-down tips, a simple bender and super glue.
