Self-adhesive stencils for spraying the camouflage scheme onto a model of the two-seat combat trainer version of the Su-17 fighter-bomber with a variable-geometry wing. The stencils are laid onto a dry base coat and define the shape of the camouflage fields on the fuselage, the wing and the tail surfaces. They are not cockpit masks, which are dealt with separately.
On an aircraft the camouflage pattern is continuous, it carries across the fuselage onto the wing and onto the tail surfaces, and it has to line up once assembled as well. So it pays to put the model together temporarily before painting and to check that the individual parts of the stencil line up. A variable-geometry wing complicates matters in that the pattern has to fit in one particular position, usually the spread one. Decide in advance in which position you are going to build the model and align the mask accordingly.
Spray in order from the lightest shade to the darkest, in thin coats and perpendicular to the surface. Always let the paint dry between the individual shades, otherwise a mask laid onto a fresh coat will sink into it and damage it as it is lifted off. Press the edges of the stencils down, especially in the places where they cross engraved panel lines, because those are the easiest route for paint to run under a mask. Once the camouflage is finished, let the model rest and only then apply the gloss coat under the decals.
The stencils are a modeling accessory. The kit, the paints and the clear coat are not included in the package.
