About product

Antennas for a Su-35 model in 1:48 scale

The set from the Metallic Details brand contains replacement antenna stubs for a Su-35 model in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft kit or a part of one but a small refining accessory that is fitted onto a finished model in place of the plastic parts from the mold. The kit has to be bought separately.

Why small antennas are worth replacing

The Su-35 is a single-seat multi-role fighter derived from the Su-27 design family, with a reworked airframe and extensive avionics. With that avionics came a number of small blade and rod antennas scattered over the spine, the belly and the vertical tails. These details tend to be the weakest point of injection-molded plastic: because of the mold they have to be thicker than they really are, they have rounded edges and when the fuselage is sanded they are the first to break off. A fine casting or a metal part keeps a crisp profile and stands up to repeated handling of a model.

Fitting and painting tips

Work over a shallow tray or a light surface, as the parts really are small and searching for them on a carpet is hopeless. Cut the original plastic antennas off with a sharp scalpel and smooth the place over with a sanding sponge. Drill a shallow hole in the model at the seating with a drill of around four tenths of a millimeter: the part then sits firmly and you do not have to hold it with tweezers until the glue takes. Fit the antennas at the very end of the build, after the clear coat, the decals and the weathering; otherwise you will knock them off at every further step. Dose the cyanoacrylate with the tip of a toothpick, not straight from the bottle, and use as little as possible: the excess turns white as it cures and shows on a dark finish. Apply the paint with a brush before gluing and touch it in on the model afterward.

Who the set is for

  • builders of modern fighters in 1:48 scale who fine-tune the surface details
  • modelers who dislike coarse plastic antennas after sanding the seams
  • anyone after display models, where the small items are seen close up
  • more experienced builders used to working with miniature parts and tweezers

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which it does not contain. Paints, glue and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is only a set of small antennas for a Su-35 kit in 1:48 scale; you buy the model itself separately.

At the very end of the build, after the paint, the clear coat, the decals and the weathering. Antennas glued on earlier will almost certainly break off during further work on the model.

Drill a shallow hole at the seating with a fine drill and apply the cyanoacrylate with the tip of a toothpick. Excess glue turns white as it cures and shows on the finish.

Rather for a patient modeler with experience of small parts. Technically it is a simple operation, but the parts are tiny and easily lost.
